The next UN Secretary-General must stand up for human rights

As Ban Ki-Moon prepares to step down this year, a group of six non-governmental organizations has launched a human rights agenda for his successor.  Spearheaded by Amnesty International—a 1 for 7 Billion supporter—the agenda identifies eight priorities which much be tackled by the next Secretary-General.

This far-reaching agenda incorporates critical human rights concerns, ranging from gender equality to the refugee crisis to the role played by the United Nations in the field of human rights.  It encourages the candidates to “publicly embrace” these priorities during the selection process.

1 for 7 Billion hopes that civil society representatives around the world will assess the candidates and make their voices heard, in order to help determine which candidate is best equipped to lead the UN in the years ahead.
