Next month, the Security Council will officially begin to consider candidates for UN Secretary-General. In a letter to the President of the General Assembly, the Security Council announced that it will hold its first “straw poll” on 21 July.
On 7 June, the General Assembly convened for a second round of 'informal dialogues' with candidates to be the next Secretary-General. Two newly declared candidates participated in the dialogues: Miroslav Lajčák (Slovakia) and Susana Malcorra (Argentina).
The 1 for 7 Billion campaign has written to all members of the UN Security Council calling for a transparent and timely selection process, as the Council begins discussing candidates for the role of UN Secretary-General later this month.
